The Kings Lynn Witch
Hangings, witch burnings and stocks used to be a common
sight at King's Lynn's Tuesday Market Place.
Matthew Hopkins the witch finder general would be paid
to rid the city of witchcraft. He had a ‘Devils list’ where
he would keep a record of every old lady in the area.
The older and uglier the better as he would accuse
them of witchcraft and be paid to burn them.
This song is about Margaret Read,
who’s heart burst out of her chest and
splattered onto the wall whilst being burnt
at the stake. A heart has been carved into
the wall above the door at number 15
Tuesday market Place to mark this spot and it
is still there today. She has had the last laugh though
as she was unwittingly given a shrine, where as
Matthew Hopkins however was burried in an
unmarked grave in 1647.
lyrics
The Kings Lynn Witch
Chorus La Laa, la la la la la la la la la la la laaaa
La Laa, la la la la la la la la la la la laaaa
Verse 1
You blame me for the withered crops
As I am withered, like thee
You said I speak words to the devil
But he’s your affinity
Fiddle break over verse
Bridge
I once was, like the spring
In memory I’ll sing
Chorus
La Laa, la la la la la la la la la la la laaaa
La Laa, la la la la la la la la la la la laaaa
Verse 2
You line your pockets full of gold
A devils work be told
A myth, a lie, a fallacy
Will be your own demise you’ll see
Fiddle break over verse
Bridge
I once was, like the spring
To your demise, I’ll sing
Chorus
La Laa, la la la la la la la la la la la laaaa
La Laa, la la la la la la la la la la la laaaa (repeat)
Ahhhhh ohhhh La la la la
Ahhhhh Ahhhhhhh
